THE KAREN SCHUESSLER SINGERS
Enriching lives through choral excellence and community engagement...
The Karen Schuessler Singers is one of London's premiere concert choirs. Founded
in 1993 by Artistic Director Karen Ann Schuessler to explore the wealth of choral music, the
choir has become well known for quality performances and widely varied, accessible
and innovative programming. The choir was proud to be voted Best Classical Choir in London's
2009 Jack Richardson Awards.
Each season the 40 voice Karen Schuessler Singers presents a three-concert subscription
series and several other performances designed to appeal to all ages and musical
tastes. The choir performs choral repertoire rarely performed by other choirs in addition
to traditional repertoire with music ranging from Bach and Haydn to jazz to Broadway - from the
Renaissance to the 21st century - a cappella or accompanied by orchestra or band.
The Karen Schuessler Singers has been highly acclaimed for its performances
based on great themes of humanity: slavery,
the environment, multicultural understanding, war and peace. Some concerts have been intentional spiritual journeys,. Otheres
have been "feel good" concerts: "Strawberry Fields", "Pirates of Penzance"
and "100 Years of Broadway".
Since 1994, the choir has been performing Paul Winter
and Paul Halley's celebration
of Creator and Creation, "Missa Gaia/Eath Mass". In 2000 the choir released
its recording
of "Missa Gaia" as its first CD.
In 2005 the choir performed its first "Road to Freedom" celebration of Black History Month. Through music and spoken word "Road to Freedom"
weaves a powerful story of
hope and courage of the people who, through the Underground Railroad, found their
freedom in Canada. In March 2007, the Karen Schuessler Singers was honoured to perform selections from
"Road to Freedom" before Her Excellency, Governor General Michaelle Jean at the opening of
